All advice on taking care of a new kitty?

I'm getting a kitty in a couple weeks, and need to know alot of things. What type of litter is best to use? How to properly litter train them, and how long it takes? What type of food is best? If I get pet insurance will it cover the costs of shots, and spaying? What are the pros and cons of declawing? Just let me know !!All advice on taking care of a new kitty?
Litter that clumps, and isn't incredibly dusty. Like crystals, or recycled paper. Because all that crap can get into your kittens lungs. They generally pick up the whole litter training thing themselves. My vet once told me she was rescuing 4-5 week old kittens and they were dragging themselves over to a small box she set up so they could go.

Start off with kitten food. Stuff that isn't the cheap local brand. Who knows what goes into those cans. Whatever brand you can best afford. Check out the stuff your local vet has. Here in Aus Whiskas are a good brand, and that's what I'm using, my kitten's in good health. Pet insurance depends on what insurer you go with, so go grab a bucket load of pamphlets and see for yourself.

De clawing is inhumane. To cut a long story short, it's not a toenail and you have to remove some of her bone. Sure, she wont scratch you, but it's natural for her to do such things. She needs those feet to jump and walk and play, while they're healing, she wont be even able to walk to her food. You can get them onto hard-ish straws, I bought a second hand scratching post that wont become a third hand that's for sure. There's also... Soft Paws? Little cap-things that go over the claws and makes them.. well softer. Or, you could just trim them. Google brings up a lot of helpful sites on trimming claws and etc.

Good luck and congrats! All advice on taking care of a new kitty?
Avoid milk because many cats are lactose intolerant and may develop diarrhea. Declawing is the equivalent to cutting off the top segment of your finger and many people (myself included) feel that it is cruel and not worth keeping your furniture pretty to give them discomfort for years to come.

Food and litter should not be near each other - a cat will not use the bathroom where it eats. Most likely your kitten will have some sort of litter training from its mother, so it should know the basics. I took in 3 feral kittens a few weeks ago who had never seen a litter box before and, after a day of peeing all over the couches, bought ';Cat Attract'; litter from PetSmart. Within the hour all 3 were using the box. If that doesn't work, you can try gently digging its paw in the litter to show it how it works, or place its poop in the box to show where it belongs. Also, clean the box frequently and put it somewhere where kitty can have privacy.

Most kitties love canned wet food, and this gives them most of their water for the day. Canned kitten food has a higher concentration of protein than normal cat food, and is better for them when they're growing - like teenage boys. Also put out dry food and a bowl of water. Get a few toys like catnip mice, but make sure they don't have parts like eyes or ears that can be easily torn off and swallowed. And have some nice corners with cat beds or blankets/towels for a bed. Kitty will probably be scared of the new environment for a few days, so be prepared for him to spend a lot of time under the couch. Sorry, don't know about pet insurance. Hope this helps
I love tidy cats with the red lid!!! I don't use the one with the green or blue lid because its clay and what clay does is the urine seeps in and the smell seeps out! get the tidy cats with the RED lid. If you can't find that use fresh step. smells really good and back to tidy cats when you get that litter buy the crystals it helps the sand kind of clay (red lid) clumps the urine and poop so easier to get out. clean your litter box everyday, take your kitty in there and take her paw and push the litter around as if she would if she was doing it herself, bring her in there every 1-2 hours and she'll know thats her potty...to train a kitten takes patience and as much time you spend on them the faster it will go. I get friskies for my cats and they love it. I am not sure about your pet insurance I don't know why its even necessary the cat isn't going to pay you if she dies nor if shes taken or runs away, get her chipped and everything should be good. pros for declawing she don't scratch your furniture, towels, curtains, rugs, clothes....etc, claws help defend themselves, my cats have their claws if you teach them not to scratch things and get them scratching posts and those cardboard scratching boards they will likely use them. taking their claws away don't give them any way to protect them selves.
i use scoop away cat litter with crystals(they're blue). if you see them about to poop or pee, put them in the litter box so they can go about their business. now food. i love the science diet brand, but i have the adult mix, depending on the age of the kitty-cat, the mix will vary from kitten to old cat. shots and ';the operation'; are partially covered in insurence, but you still have to pay a visit fee. declawing is bad. to put it into perspective, its like cutting off the first joint of YOUR finger. not that good, huh? just cut their claws every week or so, and you'll be a cat lover in no time :)
if ur cat is still a kitten and still tething u need to give him/her some milk warm milk 2 times a night. its better when you get pet inscurence at an earley age that way u can get more profit in using the incsereance . also get a laughndrey backet or someing and make a pallet and im pretty sure ur kitten will love u 4 eva

good luck
