I have to buy a new desktop, any advice as to what type please?

I am going to buy a new desktop computer and don't know which type to get, I have been advised against a laptop,(which is what I originally wanted) not sure why though, I need it for photo's, general internet purposes, some office work, ie.Letters, and booking appointments, music, just basic stuff really, how much memory do I go for etc. but there are so many different types around. As you can gather I am not that clued up where computers are concerned, so any help is much appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation!I have to buy a new desktop, any advice as to what type please?
I would say follow this sort of a specification or higher:

1.6 to 2.0 + Ghz [processor]

1GB ram [R.A.M - RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY]

I mean.. that's where the money really lyes.. the processor and ram.

拢200-300

these day's dual core is out so you can get 1.6 X2 (dual core)

As for the make of processor theres usually two types. Intel %26amp; AMD. AMD is more value for money and does a really swell job.I have to buy a new desktop, any advice as to what type please?
Pentium 4 1Ghz

512MB RAM

Around about 拢400
I rather like polished Oak, although a mahogany can be rather nice, My cousin had this problem after he nailed a chap to his desk when he was a few days late with certain payments, but a piece of formica was glued in place which hid the damage.
Hello, Am if thats all you want it for I'd suggest a laptop, your music will take away your memory space so id suggest about an 80 harddrive. Get over 512 ram for speed and dont pick a brand you never heard of, but its all down to what your willing to spend really
I agree with your friend about the laptop, they aren't really worth the extra money. If space is an issue, ask for a sff (small form factor) base unit and an LCD display. If price is an issue, don't go for the top of the range, you can get a reconditioned machine from dell with a six month warranty. If you don't already have internet access, forget about dell and go to a high street vendor. Explain your level of expertise, what you intend to use the machine for and your budget. I wouldn't recommend PC World, they will completely ignore you as an individual and try to sell the most expensive machine you can afford and then some extended warranty.
as you dont need gaming specifications a computer may cost less than normal, but even cheap p.cs come with average graphic cards these days

for your requirements i recommend the mesh Matrix虏 A5000+ TV(http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.asp鈥?/a>

this is a good all round system with 19'; widescreen tft monitor and a nvidia geforce 512mb 7300gs graphics card

it also includes a amd athlon dual core 5000+ 64 bit processor and 1024mb of ram,and teamed up with a 320gb serail ata hard drive theres plenty of storage space for your files and music, ect

also as a added bonus this also has a hybrid tv tuner, which is both digital and analogue,so you can record live tv to hard drive

recording and burning dvd/cd,s is made easy aswell with a 18x dvd-rw drive

i reckon this a spot on system for the price and with windows vista home premium installed this is a future proof p.c

good luck
i work on and build pcs. my personal pcs i stick with gateway and ibm. compaq which is now with hewlett packard, i dont recommend either. acer is another one that isnt worth purchasing. dell is probably what i would go with afer ibm and gateway. dell is alright and they have been running a commercial lately 1 gig of ram and i believe 80 gig hard drive with a flat panel monitor for like 659.00 sounds like a pretty good deal. but for what you say you need 512 mb ram is fine and 40 gig hard drive is fine. i dont know if you want to burn your own musi or movies to cd/dvd. but its not much more toget one with a cd/dvd writer drive, rather than just a cd. i dont know where you are but i have 4 systems like new sitting here for sale. everthing incuded for between 100.00 and 250.00 anyway goodluck!
definitely go for a macbook. They totally rule and come with almost everything you need already installed--you'll probably just need to buy MS Office. Macs are the best cause they are so user friendly and you can't screw them up. Most people have very little problems and they don't really get viruses.
For the purposes you need, you don't require anything too special.

CPU: Anything over 1GHz

Hard drive: Just get an even 100GB

RAM: 1GB should do it, if that.

Ethernet hookup

I don't know why your friends said no to a laptop either, other than a laptop is generally more expensive than a desktop.

If you need any more spec recomendations, feel free to contact me.
hi mortal.

I think u should still go 4 a laptop if u should still desire. seek out your local shop or the Internet 4 bargains there will be one there at a price to fill your needs. I always tell mortals to get at least 1gig of ram (vista ready) and as much storage space as u can afford. A laptop is always more handy if you do office work.

Hi, The think about no buying a laptop is because the cost and possibility of upgrading it in the future is not viable compared with a desktop.

And to the point of which desktop?.. well.. go for the 3 or 4 major brands.. like Dell, Compaq/hp, Sony, Gateway..etc.. check the review site for those brands and for your requirements then we are talking about $500.00, It may include flat monitor check the dell dimension's on the middle range.

No real need for fancy stuff like Pricey graphic card, and also the amount of RAM memory better be from 512mb. up. is better,,etc..

Also you can build your own PC.. with good quality parts,

you may start with bare bone, checkout, Fry's electronics, Tigerdirect..etc.. they also have Outlets in the states..cheers..
