I will be starting a new job in a few weeks as a manager. I will be training with the outgoing manager for about a week. Anyone have any stories that would help to calm my nerves as I start on this? I would like to make a good impression on the employees and let them know that I want to be a good boss without coming across as a push-over. Any suggestions? What would you do differently about your first day, if you had the chance?Any advice for my first day as a new manager?
Be fair, firm, and don't put out vibes like you are looking to kick butt and cut someone down to size. It is better to have employees like and respect you and doing their jobs, than to have them fearing to screw up - and doing so because they are sweating for their jobs. See a problem? Quietly correct it - seek input from your workers. They are doing the job, they may know something about it you don't. As manager, your job is to keep things running smoothly. If they already are, don't rock the boat - at least not all at once..
