Out of the 3 the Civic is probably your ';greenest'; choice.
For durability and adaptability I'd choose the VW. I own a 94 Golf and it's still tight, dependable and fun to drive. The ride is quite and smooth and when I step on the gas it ';gits';. You'll be getting that ';German engineering'; at a discount. Parts can be pricy though. But then Honda parts are too for the first 5-7 years. It's Honda policy not to release the rights to make parts to the aftermarket suppliers. It keeps you coming back to the dealership for the full priced factory parts. ( I worked a Honda parts desk for a while)
All else fails check out all 3 on Yahoo autos and they should tell you ';total cost to own';. These figures are based on mileage estimates, depreciation, and maintenance costs based on previous models performance.
Most importantly, test drive them. If possible, rent one for a week. A car is your second biggest investment make sure it fits you. Nothing is worse than getting a car home only to find out that the transmission acts funny at around 45 mph (my 98 Chrysler Sebring).
Good LuckI'm buying a new car and need advice. I've cut it down to Volkswagon Golf, Honda Civic or Mazda. Any advice?
Honda Civic all the way!
Better fuel economy, better fit and finish, higher resale value, much more comfortable to drive and be a passenger in, and better crash test ratings.

I just got the new '07 Honda Civic LX and I absolutely love it. I would name it my first born child. ;) The redesign is absolutely gorgeous with the digital speedometer and odometer and the crisp stereo music quality. Moreover, I've saved so much on gas money. I gas up about once every other week and it's only about $30. :)
Hope that helps. Cheers.
better than all those...get a BMW!
Honda. You can't go wrong. VW parts are way high.
The Honda Civic is pretty nice, especially if you get the SI edition.
HONDA CIVIC! Great Car. Looks nice. Spacious.
