Simply have determination - patience - be unique - and learn to reject the rejection letters. Don't write for the hope of fame and fortune - you'd be writing for all the wrong reasons. Write for the sake of writing - for your sake. It's a tough world, publishing. But if you're stubborn enough - you can be moderately successful.
Also - pay attention to your audience. You know it is YA - now find out what is currently in high demand in terms of the readers wanting to read it and the publishers wanting to publish it.

You should definitely read Robert Heinlein. He is one of the most famous and respected science fiction authors that also wrote a good deal for young adults.
